This lot features a “Mean” Joe Greene 1974 Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl IX Championship 10K Gold & Diamond Ring with extremely rare original wood presentation box. The ring has the player’s name “GREENE” on the side. The ring was made by Jostens, measures size 10.25-10.5, weighs 41.5 grams and remains in NRMT-NMT/MT condition. The original wood presentation box remains in NM-NM/MT condition has “Joe Greene” engraved on top. Mean Joe Greene is a member of the National Football League Hall of Fame and was a key piece of the Pittsburgh Steelers “Steel Curtain Defense”. The Steelers upset the Minnesota Vikings 16-6 to win Super Bowl IX. The ring was originally acquired from a Josten's representative and is accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance. This unique ring does not have the typical numeric saleman sample number engraved inside (nor is there any evidence of its removal) that you would normally see on 1974 Steelers “samples”. The 1974 “samples” also include cz stones rather than diamonds. This ring was made by Jostens and has “Best Wishes Bob Lettieri, “Mean” Joe Greene” engraved inside. The ring wasn't engraved by Jostens, it was engraved by an independent jeweler after production of the ring. Joe still has his own personal ring. That ring would likely command $150-250k if it were to ever be made available. Also accompanied by a detailed appraisal of the ring. The round brilliant diamond in the center of the ring weighs approximately 1.01 carats. The ring was recently appraised (6/9/23) and estimates its worth at $12,250 based on the rings intrinsic value though its collectible value has much higher potential due to its scarcity.
