Denver's very first Super Bowl appearance, the 1977 season was the team's 18th year in professional football, and 8th in the NFL. The Broncos had, by far, their best season to date finishing first in the AFC West at 12-2 and making the playoffs for the first time in team history. Denver won its first two playoff games in franchise history, over perennial AFC powerhouse Pittsburgh Steelers & Oakland Raiders. Led by NFL Comeback Player of the Year, QB Craig Morton, along with stars Rick Upchurch, Lyle Alzado, Randy Gradishar, ESPN's Tom Jackson, Louis Wright, Otis Armstrong, Bill Thompson, & Haven Moses, to name a few, the Broncos won their first AFC Championship. The Orange Crush avenged an early season loss, with a victory over the Oakland Raiders, 20-17 propelling them to Super Bowl XII. Even though they fell to the NFC Champion Dallas Cowboys, 27-10 in Super Bowl XII, the 1977 season was still a major leap for the Broncos who had never won more than 9 games in a year. Coach Red Miller, in his first full-season as the Broncos' head coach, was named "NFL Coach of the Year" after finishing 14-3 as A.F.C. Champions.
