Hall of Fame catcher Ray Schalk played 16 seasons with the White Sox (1912-1928), and one with the NY Giants. and was arguably the first “modern’ catcher. Though only 150 pounds, he was renowned for his toughness, and was the first catcher to consistently play 100 or more games per season. A defensive star, Schalk led the league in fielding percentage eight times and putouts nine times - and his 30 stolen bases in 1916 remained the record for a catcher until 1982. A sharp closeup, this photo of Schalk - and his winning smile - could have been taken yesterday. The engaging 4” x 6” first generation photo was taken circa 1919, a year when Schalk would play with the “Black Sox” in the World Series. Condition is NRMT.
