This lot features the incredibly rare 1952 Topps Frank Campos card #307 "Black Star on Back" variety card that has professionally authenticated, encapsulated and graded a PSA 4.5 VG-EX+. The “King” of the post WWII sets, by far, is the renowned 1952 Topps set. Elite enthusiasts actively pursue either the top stars from this sanctified issue or attempt to complete 407 card master set. For those extreme card collecting purists, there are an additional 83 variation cards to pursue including “black and red back correct” versions, the Sain/Page “Black Back Errors and three Ray Boone variations. There is one particular variation; however, that has eluded some of the most advanced enthusiasts; the ultra rare Frank Campos “Black Star on Back” version that includes a black star (vs. the standard red star) to the right of the verso’s “TOPPS BASEBALL” typography at the lower center border. How scarce is this Frank Campos card? Consider that PSA has encapsulated almost 478 of the #307 Campos standard “red star” 1952 Topps specimens and only 87 “black star” variations. Indeed, ONLY 15% of the total Campos “black star” versions have been encapsulated by PSA, and presented here is one of those scarce “black star” examples in a fine PSA 4.5 VG-EX+ holder. While this ultra-obscure Campos card is not one of the frequently discussed hobby rarities, don’t let its desirability and value fool you. A myriad of high end 1952 Topps collectors are well aware of its existence, painstakingly seeking to find a single copy to add to their PSA Master Set Registry checklist. Fortunately for one lucky enthusiast, the search may now be over courtesy of this superb example. While Frank Campos will never be enshrined in Cooperstown, his legacy will forever be etched in cardboard immortality via his 1952 Topps #307 “black star” variation card. Only 34 examples have earned a higher grade than this beauty.
