This First Day Cover dated January 5th, 1948 has been signed by in black pen. Bunche was a political scientist, academic, and diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940's mediation in Israel. He was the first African American to be so honored in the history of the prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. In 1963, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy. Bunche passed away back in 1971 at the age of 68 making his signature a particularly coveted and difficult one to obtain.
