This lot features an original 1917 close-up image of Chicago White Sox infielder Buck Weaver taken by renowned photographer George Grantham Bain. This shot of Weaver was taken shortly before the start of the 1917 World Series in which the Sox defeated the Giants in 6 games. Weaver's 9 year career was cut short due to the "Black Sox" scandal of 1919. Weaver batted .324 with 11 hits in the World Series and wasn't accused of participating in the scandal but was banned because he knew of the scheme and didn't do anything about it. Weaver has many supporters who lobby for his reinstatement to this day. This first generation photo measures 4x6 inches and has Culver Service stampings and sticker on the reverse. The photo is dated October 2nd, 1917 and remains in remarkable condition considering it is a 100 years old. Very unique, vintage piece of baseball history.
