The 1988 Kansas City Royals were a Major League Baseball team that represented the city of Kansas City in the American League. The team finished the regular season with a record of 84-77, which was good for third place in the American League West division. The 1988 Royals were led offensively by veteran outfielder Willie Wilson, who batted .286 with 30 stolen bases, and third baseman George Brett, who hit .306 with 24 home runs and 101 RBI. The pitching staff was led by Bret Saberhagen, who posted a 3.80 ERA with 14 wins and 16 losses, and Mark Gubicza, who had a 4.06 ERA with 20 wins and 8 losses. Despite a solid season, the 1988 Royals fell short of the playoffs. Nevertheless, the team's strong core of players would continue to compete in the years to come, including a championship in 1985 and a playoff appearance in 1989.
