The 1988 American League All-Star Game was held on July 12, 1988, at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. The game ended in a 2-1 victory for the American League, marking their third straight win in the midsummer classic. The game was highlighted by strong pitching performances from both teams, as both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. Boston Red Sox third baseman Wade Boggs and Cleveland Indians catcher Terry Steinbach each drove in runs for the American League, while outfielder Darryl Strawberry provided the lone run for the National League with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. Oakland Athletics closer Dennis Eckersley earned the save, retiring all four batters he faced in the final two innings. Steinbach was named the game's Most Valuable Player for his game-winning RBI and his excellent defense behind the plate.
